Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a disease of the brain and spinal cord (central nervous system) that occurs when the immune system attacks the protective sheath (myelin) that covers nerve fibers and interrupts communication problems between the brain and the body.
Signs and symptoms of MS vary widely and depend on which and how far ranging the nerve damage is. Some sufferers may lose the ability to walk independently while others may not. This is a disease that goes through periods of remission and relapse with can be for weeks, months or years. Overall, the disease progresses with age, but it varies greatly among those that are afflicted. While there is no cure for multiple sclerosis, there are treatments that can ameliorate some of its attacks and manage symptoms.
