Allowing your loved one to safely age in place in their own home – comprehensive caregiver services throughout New York City, including Manhattan, Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens, Staten Island and Nassau County.
Aging-In-Place is “the ability to live in one’s own home and community safely, independently, and comfortably, regardless of age, income, or ability level.” Of course, this is the preference of the vast majority of seniors. With more and more seniors Aging-In-Place, it is vital that their environment is modified to their physical needs so that it is both livable and safe.
Making the home environment safe for seniors and elderly adults
To meet that need, the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) has developed a Certified Aging-In-Place Specialist (CAPS) designation for those trained to modify the homes of those who are elderly or disabled. This certification can extend to levels I, II, & III in terms of the extent of the training. David York Agency has on staff a fully credentialed CAPS professional that can assist in making the senior’s home safe for them to live in.
At David York Agency, we are fortunate to have a Certified Aging-In-Place Specialist on staff. Martin Kamiel, CAPS III credentialed, will go to the client’s home along with our Registered Nurse to do an assessment. He not only produces a written report with recommendations, but he also attaches sources for purchases the products and recommendations for contractors to do the work. He can also manage any project you need him too.
Elder-proofing can help your loved one live safely and independently in their home
We often think in terms of baby-proofing homes, but elderproofing is just as important. Elder-proofing is making modifications to a home to conform to the specific requirements of the elderly. Modifications can range from something as simple as putting in nightlights along a passageway or stove safety knobs in the kitchen to the more extensive stairlift for a stairway or a complete bathroom re-do to comply with handicap requirements. Modifications may be as simple as a handlebar in the shower to something as complex as a bathroom remodel. Our CAPS expert may recommend a simple ramp for steps or an electric stairlift. The fixes are totally dependent on each individual’s ability and home situation.
Elder-proofing an elderly person’s environment is critical if they are to remain in their familiar surroundings and age in place safely and comfortably. It also becomes an issue when you have a loved one coming to live with you or you are helping prepare a senior’s home upon their return from a hospital or rehab stay. You must make sure that they come home to a safe environment.
The fees for this service vary according to the level of service you require. Home Assessments start at $125 which includes both the assessment report and resources list. Management fees are determined on an individual basis based on the client’s specific need.
