home care for multiple sclerosisMultiple sclerosis (MS) is a disease of the brain and spinal cord (central nervous system) that occurs when the immune system attacks the protective sheath (myelin) that covers nerve fibers and interrupts communication problems between the brain and the body.

Signs and symptoms of MS vary widely and depend on which and how far ranging the nerve damage is. Some sufferers may lose the ability to walk independently while others may not. This is a disease that goes through periods of remission and relapse with can be for weeks, months or years. Overall, the disease progresses with age, but it varies greatly among those that are afflicted. While there is no cure for multiple sclerosis, there are treatments that can ameliorate some of its attacks and manage symptoms.

These symptoms include:

  • Numbness or weakness in one or more limbs that typically occurs on one side of your body at a time, or the legs and trunk
  • Partial or complete loss of vision, usually in one eye at a time, often with pain during eye movement
  • Prolonged double vision
  • Tingling or pain in parts of your body
  • Electric-shock sensations that occur with certain neck movements, especially bending the neck forward
  • Tremor, lack of coordination or unsteady gait
  • Slurred speech
  • Fatigue
  • Dizziness
  • Problems with bowel and bladder function

The origin of the disease is unknown, but it is considered an autoimmune disease where the immune system malfunctions and attacks its host, the body. It is unknown why some develop the disease and whether it is due to genetics or environment.

Risk factors for the disease include:

  • Age: More common between 15 and 60.
  • Sex: Women are about twice as likely as men are to develop MS
  • Family history of having MS
  • Certain infections such as Epstein-Barr, the virus that causes infectious mononucleosis
  • Race: White people are at highest risk; Asian, African or Native American descendents have the lowest risk
  • Climate: It is far more common temperate climates like Canada, the northern United States, New Zealand, southeastern Australia and Europe
  • Certain autoimmune diseases that have a slightly higher risk of developing MS such as thyroid disease, type 1 diabetes or inflammatory bowel disease
  • Smokers are more apt to develop relapsing-remitting MS

Complications include:

  • Muscle stiffness or spasms
  • Paralysis, typically in the legs
  • Problems with bladder, bowel and sexual function
  • Mental changes, such as forgetfulness or mood swings
  • Depression
  • Epilepsy
