Naturally, the vast majority of seniors are thrilled to be able to age-in-place. However, we must ensure that their environment is as safe as possible. Given their physical limitations, we need to be mindful of various scenarios that are potentially dangerous and put in place safeguards so that a potential catastrophe is avoided. Therefore, home safety is more important than ever! ‘
These are the little things we may take for granted that become real obstacles as we age. For example….
- That area rug you have had in the living room for decades, is it still safe to have around when your mom or dad or spouse is getting around the house with a walker?
- Remember that low, sleek toilet in your beautiful bathroom? Is it really practical anymore given it may be difficult to get on or off of for someone who finds it difficult to sit down and get up easily?
- Don’t overlook the kitchen faucet with a separate hot and cold knob. This now may be painful to use for someone with arthritis or dexterity issues.
These are just a few of the issues that may arise. That is why we have a handy Elderproofing checklist for you to use as you start to think about these issues and modify the surroundings of your aging loved ones.
We have also included a popular blog post 14 Tips for Elder-proofing Your Home. Please check out our blog for other posts on the subject of seniorproofing.
We also have a DYA Elderproofing professional on staff to help guide you through the process. For more information on patient and home safety, please feel free to contact our administrator, Martin Kamiel, who is a Certified Aging-In-Place Specialist. Most importantly, he has a wealth of information and expertise on the subject and could walk you through the process.
