December 5-11: Handwashing Awareness Week
Handwashing Awareness Week might seem trivial. However, at this point, we can all see how critical this issue really is.Some fun facts:
- 400 BCE The ancient Greek historian Thucydides is the first to suggest that disease can spread from one person to another.
- 1546 Italian scholar and poet Girolamo Fracastoro suggests that epidemics are caused by small particles or “spores” that can be transmitted from one person to another.
- 1818 Ignaz Philipp Semmelweis, a pioneer in and advocate for antiseptic procedures, is born in Hungary. He was the one that noticed that those doctors who went straight from the autopsy room to the birthing room transmitted puerperal fever to their patients resulting in significantly higher infant mortality. After he made them wash their hands, mortality rate significantly improved immediately.
It has been a long and painful road to get to this point, but hand washing is widely accepted as the most important element in halting the spread of disease. Covid-19 was a rude reminder to this. We must never become lax in this hygiene practice. Simply put – It saves lives!
The CDC has a website and associated materials to help promote this critical initiative. We have included some instructional videos and posters in this Newsletter Blog Digest. We have also published a new blog post on the topic on our website here. Links to further research are always included.
I hope you find them informative. Please do not hesitate to call me with any questions you may have.
Always here to help,
