“I’m not old, I’m just well-seasoned.” – Unknown
In order to promote healthier lifestyles and preventive healthcare, the federal government established Healthy Aging Month in September of 1992. As the Baby Boomers turned 50, there was a great push to adopt a healthy way of living. The goal was to have people to remain vibrant and disease free for as many years as possible. The new outlook was to view aging as just another stage of life rather than the slow, painful downward spiral to the finish line. The Boomers were not going to pass peacefully into the night. They had a lot more living to do.
Healthy Aging Today
At this point in time, with people living much longer than our grandparents even, it seems like the initiative has been successful. The retirement age of 65 has become a signpost for beginning a new era. The best is often yet to come. In fact, many retirees turn to second careers or additional work stints to fill their days since they are still very much capable of contributing to society.
